Who am I?

About me
Hey there! My name is Lily and I love to read and teach! On this site, you will find a plethora of book reviews, read alouds, and reading instruction resources. In addition to finding reading instruction resources, this semester you will see lots of new content focused on Language Arts and Writing!

I grew up in an extremely rural and tiny town called Moncure. It is in North Carolina located in Chatham County. Growing up I played outside a lot and read a lot. Those two things went together a lot more than you would think. My reading would inspire my play and fuel my imagination. My treehouse became my log cabin in the woods, like the one Laura Ingalls Wilder lived in. A snowy walk in the woods became my entrance into the land of Narnia.

I now live in Boone North Carolina. I have recently graduated with a BS in Elementary Education with a Concentration in Spanish from Appalachian State University. I am continuing my time at Appalachian by pursuing my Masters in Reading Education and a Certificate in Teaching Emergent Bilingual Populations in Content Areas.

Growing up in a small town and attending grades 1st-8th with the same 26 students basically the whole time, has developed a special place in my heart for small rural schools. They feel like home to me, but they are also where I feel called to go as an educator to share with them the diverse world we live in. I hope to inspire students, much like the peers I grew up with, to remember home but to also go see, meet, and experience all of the people and opportunities that are waiting for them outside of their home.

Name Story
The Story Behind My Name
My parents named me Lily Brianne Moore when I was born. They didn't know if I was going to be a boy or a girl until I was born. They wanted to be surprised and they wanted everyone we know and love to be surprised too! Since my parents weren't sure if I was going to be a boy or a girl, so they had to think of names for both. If I had been born the opposite gender, my parents would have named me William Palmer Moore. My dad is named William, my Pawpaw is named William, my Grandaddy (great-grandpa) was named William, and it goes back 5 more generations. All of the Moore men gave their sons the first name William and then selected a middle name that they would call their son. Some of the Williams in the family went by nicknames instead of their middle names. They were going to give me the middle name Palmer and call me that instead of William, which would have been my first name. Palmer was my paternal "Bama's" (grandma's) maiden name. To my knowledge, my parents just picked out one name for each gender, so I don't think there were any other contenders for what my name would be no matter what gender I was. I got the name Lily from my mom's paternal Grandma, Lilly Mae. My mom didn't pay attention to the spelling, so that's why my name isn't spelled exactly like my great grandmother's. One of my mom's favorite flowers is Lily's, that's another reason why she picked Lily for my name. I got my middle name from my dad's middle name (the name he goes by) and my maternal Granny's middle name. My dad's name is Brian and my Granny's middle name is Anne, they squished the two names together and got Brianne! My name is a unique mix of the names from my family members and now that I'm older I think that's pretty cool because their history will always be apart of my name and my name will always be apart of theirs. When I was younger I didn't always appreciate my name because sometimes my classmates or cousins would struggle to produce the /L/ sound and they would call me willy, wiwy, or even /y/illy. The most confusing thing about my name when I was younger (let's be honest sometimes this still confuses me), was when they would ask me if my name had 1 L or 2. I have two total L's in my name, but that's not what they were asking! They were asking if it was spelled (2) Lilly or (1) Lily. Don't even get me started on the other variations for how to spell Lily, it's a rabbit hole for another time. Despite my childhood beef with my name, I really like it now. I love that not many people have my name and that people always think it is beautiful.
