Lily Moore
Future Teacher
About Me:
I am Lily Moore, native of the incredibly underdeveloped town of Moncure, North Carolina. It's a small town off of Highway US 1, just 25 minutes south of Raleigh, about 45 minutes from UNC Chapel Hill (GO HEELS!), and about 15 minutes north of Sanford. If you don't know where any of those places are, take your finger at try and point at the middle of North Carolina, you're probably pointing at Moncure or pointing at the edge of it. Fun fact about Moncure and one of the communities that is a part of it. In the 1790s when our state was trying to decide on where our capital should be, Moncure, more specifically Haywood (now a small community in Moncure), was in the running to be our state capital due to the rail roads and its proximity to many rivers. They ended up choosing Raleigh, but it's funny to think that this teeny tiny town could have been what Raleigh is today!

I am a sophomore Elementary Education major at Appalachian State University. I would love to teach grades k-2. My concentration is in Foreign Language and Literature, specifically Spanish. I don't necessarily want to be a Spanish teacher or do ESL, but I do hope that I will someday work at a school with a dual language program. I want to have the ability to teach in two languages. I was inspired to pursue dual language teaching by some of my campers from when I worked at the YMCA. At the school I was located at, they had an optional dual language program for their students. It was so cool to be able to see my campers communicating with each other in two languages (English and Spanish). I hope to do grad school here at ASU, what I want to study in grad school I'm not sure of yet, but I have some time to figure that out.

As a student at Appalachian State University I am involved in a handful of clubs. I attend Appalachian Educators bi-weekly meetings, I am a member of the Swing Dance Club (We are competing in the homecoming Lip Sync battle, get hype!), and I attend College Connection. College Connection is a college student ministry associated with a local church, Alliance Bible Fellowship (ABF). It's through being a apart of this group that I met many of my dearest friends here at App State and got involved with volunteering at the Hospitality House.

This course examines how emerging technologies are transforming our society and schools, as well as the implications these changes have for teaching and learning. Strategies for building students’ critical habits of mind with respect to new technologies and media will be developed in the context of a broad definition of literacy that includes traditional and emerging literacies. In order to successfully adapt instruction to the unique learning styles of their students and engage students in interactive learning and problem-solving, 21st century teachers will need to create learning experiences that employ a variety of media and technology tools in innovative ways. In addition, state and national standards in numerous areas of the curriculum now require students to be able to comprehend diverse media texts that are read, viewed, and heard, recognizing the author's purpose or intent and making inferences from the text. This means that teachers and students need to be versed in media literacy, or the critical habits of mind for analyzing and evaluating messages carried and conveyed in different media formats. This website shares learning activities that I created in the course that demonstrate my abilities actively integrate media and technology into teaching and learning.
